“Monsters are not born; they are made.”
– Powerless by Lauren Roberts
In Powerless, Lauren Roberts delivers a gripping YA fantasy set in a world where strength determines survival. The Elites—individuals gifted with extraordinary powers—rule over the powerless, who are seen as weak and disposable. Paedyn Gray, a girl without abilities, has survived by blending in and staying invisible. But when a single misstep lands her in the deadly Purging Trials, she must fight to stay alive in a competition designed for those with powers she doesn’t have.
Enter Kai—the brooding, powerful, and undeniably dangerous Elite prince. As a competitor in the trials and one of Paedyn’s biggest threats, he should be her enemy. But as the trials unfold, their fates become more intertwined than either of them could have anticipated. Tension, secrets, and a slow-burning romance make Powerless a thrilling ride from start to finish.
– Paedyn “Pae” Gray –
Paedyn is the kind of protagonist who thrives on wit and adaptability. Though she lacks powers, she’s sharp, resourceful, and fiercely determined. Her ability to outthink her opponents is just as dangerous as any Elite’s ability. Despite the constant danger, she never backs down, making her an easy character to root for. Her resilience and fiery personality keep the book engaging, and watching her navigate the trials is one of the highlights of the story.
– Kai Azer –
Kai is every bit the ruthless prince he’s rumored to be, but beneath the icy exterior is someone far more complex. His power and presence make him intimidating, yet he’s undeniably magnetic. His relationship with Paedyn is filled with tension, making every interaction between them feel electric. While he starts off as a clear antagonist, his development throughout the book adds depth to his character, making him a standout.
– My Honest Review –
For a YA fantasy, Powerless is exceptionally well-written. The worldbuilding is immersive, the stakes feel real, and the characters—especially Paedyn and Kai—are compelling. The Purging Trials create a high-stakes atmosphere that keeps the plot moving at a fast pace, making it hard to put the book down.
One of the biggest strengths of the book is its character dynamics. The tension between Paedyn and Kai is well-executed, balancing rivalry, mistrust, and undeniable chemistry. The slow-burn romance adds to the tension without overshadowing the action, keeping both elements balanced.
That being said, some aspects of the story felt familiar—trial-based competition, a caste system, and the classic enemies-to-lovers trope. While Powerless doesn’t necessarily break new ground in YA fantasy, it executes these tropes extremely well, making it a compelling and enjoyable read.
