Rating:★★★★☆–  4/5

“Whatever you’ve heard about Caraval, it doesn’t compare to the reality. It’s more than just a game or a performance. It’s the closest you’ll ever find yourself to magic.”

– Caraval

In Caraval, Stephanie Garber invites readers into a whimsical, enchanting world where nothing is as it seems. Scarlett Dragna has lived under her tyrannical father, dreaming of adventure and escape. When an invitation to the mysterious game of Caraval arrives, it offers her a chance to flee her old life and experience the magic she’s always longed for. But when her sister, Tella, is kidnapped by the show’s mastermind, Legend, Scarlett must navigate the unpredictable world of Caraval to save her sister before the clock runs out.

– Scarlett “would rather make a to-do list than a bad decision” Dragna –

Scarlett is the heart of Caraval, a character torn between fear and hope. Her cautious nature clashes with the dangers and wonders of Caraval, but her love for her sister drives her to take risks she never thought possible. Scarlett’s development throughout the book—moving from passive and fearful to brave and determined—is compelling, even when she’s not always the most daring heroine.

– Tella “more likely to run into trouble than run from it” Dragna –

Tella is the opposite of Scarlett in every way. Bold, daring, and impulsive, she craves excitement and freedom from her father’s control. While she’s missing for most of the novel, her presence lingers as the mystery of her disappearance propels Scarlett through the game. Tella’s story adds intrigue and a sense of urgency to the narrative.

– Julian “has enough secrets to fill a pirate ship” Santos –

Julian is the wildcard of the story, a sailor who aids Scarlett in her quest. He’s charming, but there’s always a sense that he knows more than he lets on, and his shifting allegiances keep both Scarlett and the reader guessing. His chemistry with Scarlett adds a layer of tension, as the lines between ally and enemy blur within the game’s seductive magic.

– My Honest Review –

Caraval is a book that dazzles with its imaginative world and high-stakes adventure. The premise is both intriguing and unpredictable. Scarlett’s journey, while sometimes frustrating in its so-called ‘cautiousness’, is balanced by the fast-paced plot and the growing tension of the game.

Caraval is a captivating read that is perfect for those who love fantasy and has a touch of romance and mystery.

Happy Reading!
